RespirAÇÃO Program - A Proposal for a Path to a Life Free from Smoking

The RespirAÇÃO program is an integrative and personalized approach aimed at people who want to quit smoking and achieve a lighter, cigarette-free life. Developed by Dr. Cláudia Magaldi and supported by her multidisciplinary team, the program combines scientific knowledge and more than 25 years of experience with effective support and work to support the smoking cessation process with autonomy, support, ease and movement.

Program Objectives

●  To promote safe and effective smoking cessation for expatriates living in Europe who speak Portuguese and English

●  To embrace the physical, emotional and behavioral aspects involved in cigarette use

●  To strengthen the autonomy and self-esteem of those who want to quit smoking

●  To offer technical and human support at all stages of the process

Program Structure

RespirAÇÃO is divided into four main phases:


Phase 1 – Individual Global Assessment (1h30)

●  In-depth clinical interview

●  Assessment of physical, psychological and behavioral dependence

●  Deepening understanding of each client’s relationship with cigarette use and the influences

on their lives

●  Defining the quit date and personalized strategies

Phase 2 – Intensive Group Intervention

●  5 Weekly group sessions focusing on CBT and Motivational Interviewing

●  Health education and effects of tobacco

●  Medication support (when indicated)

●  Start of movement sessions (walking, healing movements and yoga)

Phase 3 – Maintenance and Relapse Prevention (in group)

●  1 Biweekly Session for 2 months

●  1 Monthly Session throughout the year

●  Reinforcement of strategies to deal with triggers and cravings and life without cigarettes

Phase 4 – Follow-up and Autonomy

●  Monthly follow-up for 1 year after cessation

●  Light and continuous support via closed group

●  Annual reassessment of general health condition and quality of life

Movement as Part of Treatment

RespirAÇÃO believes in the body as an ally. Therefore, it includes:

​Mindful Walking Sessions:

● Outdoor practices focusing on breathing, mindfulness and creating new pleasurable habits

Healing Movement Sessions:

● Online and indoor practices to be incorporated as daily rituals

Therapeutic Yoga:

●  Sessions focusing on emotional release, breathing and strengthening

●  Led by a holistic therapist who is a partner of the program

●  Individual and group care

●  Online meetings, and some face-to-face moments in Amsterdam

●  First conversation held within Florescer Cuida de Você, contributing to Florescer Holanda's social projects

●  Biopsychosocial approach with an international team

●  Coverage by Dutch health insurance (percentage according to each individual insurance)

-  Coverage by Dutch health insurance (percentage according to each individual insurance)

-  If the client does not have Dutch health insurance: the cost is determined individually after the initial assessment session, respecting the reality of each client. The program can be adapted to different needs and possibilities.
